"Cuban Chrome" is the first American TV production to be filmed entirely on location in Cuba. The docuseries explores a fascinating time warp that characterizes Cuban car culture, dating to the U.S.-imposed embargo in 1960 that prohibited all American exports to the island nation except for food and medicine. As a result, thousands of vintage American vehicles can be found in Cuba, and they represent much more than just a means of transportation. The series chronicles how the A Lo Cubano Car Club -- passionate car enthusiasts, restorers, mechanics and apprentices -- go to extremes to preserve the treasured cars for future generations, and maintain the ones they already own and depend upon.

Car enthusiast Mike Brewer and internationally renowned car designer Ant Anstead work together to give new life to run-down, classic automobiles in order to resell at a profit. Working with a limited budget, Mike's job is to find and purchase a vehicle before presenting it to Ant, who makes the necessary repairs -- and there usually are plenty of them -- giving tips along the way about electrical and structural issues, mechanics, cosmetic touches and finishing work. Once complete, the restored car is taken for a test drive, and then Mike negotiates the purchase price with a new owner. The series, a British import, began airing on Discovery Channel in the U.K. in 2003. Its first 13 seasons featured master mechanic Edd China as Brewer's sidekick.

Fueled in part by the proliferation of reality shows covering the collector-car industry, competition in the U.S. to locate and buy vintage automobiles is stiffer than ever. So why not venture outside the States and see what other countries have to offer in this trade? That's what Antonio Brunet and Yusuf Johnson have done, and that's chronicled in "Chrome Underground." Brunet -- the founder of Austin-based Motoreum, which bills itself as Texas' premier classic-car dealer -- and Johnson go where other collectors avoid -- lawless countries. The payoff can be huge, but so are the risks. The guys are targets for thieves because they carry lots of cash, and they are making dangerous deals in places they barely understand. Also, many of the vehicles haven't been driven for decades, and chances of them breaking down in gang-controlled areas are high.
