The famous "Cake Boss," who also is a passionate home cook, opens the Valastro recipe box and demonstrates how he creates some of their favorite Italian dishes. With the help of friends and family members, Buddy cooks everything from his grandmother's pasta recipes to sides and everyday desserts that make dinner at the Valastros a family event.

In each episode, four of the country's top bakers compete for a $10,000 prize in a cupcake-baking competition. The show consists of three rounds, with one contestant eliminated after each round. In round one, the contestants must baking a cupcake that is judged on taste alone. Baking three cupcakes is the task in the second round, when they are judged on both taste and presentation. Then, the remaining two bakers are each given a five-person team in the final round, in which they have two hours to make 1,000 cupcakes. The baker who the judges determine made the best cupcakes in all three rounds takes home the cash.

Like anyone who works long hours, he still needs to put aside some time to have fun with his family.This series documents the Valastros as they head into an RV to take a memorable summer road trip through the South. Buddy, wife Lisa and their four children begin in their home state of New Jersey, then head south through South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee and Louisiana as they experience some of the best things the region has to offer. A slice of Americana is on the itinerary in the form of visits to Graceland and Dollywood and, of course, the master baker includes food in his vacation plans. Buddy and his family make saltwater taffy the old-fashioned way in Myrtle Beach, enjoy a crab platter and fried chicken in Georgia, and sample etouffee in New Orleans.
