On the outskirts of Los Angeles lay the city's roughest neighborhoods, the stomping grounds for LAPD Detective Lindy Gligorijevicin in the late 1990s. During that time, the police department's Foothill Homicide Unit investigated hundreds of murders, but only Gligorijevic -- driven by the need to give victims a voice -- earned the moniker "the killer closer." In this series, she revisits her most shocking cases, detailing how she solved them and the ways in which she convinced cold-blooded killers to confess.

Hundreds of homicide cases in any given year can shake even the staunchest cities and police departments to the core. The statistics, however, don't paint the real stories and the effect that lingers -- through the pain endured by victims' loved ones, the community impact, and the memories that detectives will never forget. "Homicide City" explores unforgettable murder cases from major American cities, investigations that had law enforcement banding together across metropolitan landscapes in a sequence of manhunts. Each story is told by veteran homicide detectives, local reporters, and the victims' families.
The holiday season between Thanksgiving and New Year's is often thought of as a celebratory period to spend time with friends and family. That is not always the case, though, as the period is not immune from experiencing the same types of violent crimes that occur throughout the year. This series documents stories of tragedy that struck during the holidays, with firsthand accounts from people who had friends or family members killed during the joyous time. Sometimes the victim is killed by someone close to them, such as a case of sibling rivalry turned deadly, but sometimes the killing is done by a stranger who interrupts a holiday gathering with gunfire.

Some of the world's most notorious murders are the subject of "It Takes a Killer," which investigates the crimes from the perspective of the killers, trying to get inside their minds and determine their motives. Leading homicide investigators and experts from such agencies as the FBI and Scotland Yard take a look at the evidence pulled from crime scenes and profile the killer's behavior to try to piece together the details of each murder, explaining when, why and how each criminal committed the crime. For the wannabe detectives watching the show, the experts also reveal how the crime was solved -- which often requires authorities to think like a killer.

From the moment a homicide is reported, a file is assembled to document every facet of the investigation -- crime scene photos, notes and observations, forensic reports, witness interviews, suspect profiles -- and continues to grow with new information until an arrest is made and conviction attained. Investigation Discovery opens these "murder books" to tell haunting tales buried within the pages. Hourlong episodes take viewers back in time with details of decades-old cold cases using actual archival footage, crime-scene evidence and first-person interviews with lead investigators, unraveling the mystery and uncovering what broke the cases open.

It takes teamwork and commitment to solve homicides. "The Shift" looks into the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department to show what's involved in solving cases, giving closure to victims' families. The series follows the department's middle shift -- 2 to 10:30 p.m. daily, considered prime time for killings -- as detectives go from an initial radio call dispatching a unit to the scene, to the moment a suspect is in handcuffs. With the IMPD, that happens more than in many other U.S. cities. Nationally, about 60 percent of death crimes result in arrest and indictment, but in Indianapolis, the department has nearly 80 percent success with these cases.

"Murder by Numbers" begins in a similar fashion to many true-crime series. After a body is found, an intense investigation commences, quickly turning the focus to a very likely subject. But just as the viewer eases into the case via cinematic re-enactments and through the eyes of detectives, a shocking discovery of a second body not only eliminates the original suspect, it redirects the investigation on a harrowing journey of pure criminal evil.

There's a reason murder investigations don't begin with preconceived notions. Sometimes those least expected to be capable of committing such dark deeds -- respected role models and trusted members of the community -- can have a sinister side. "Unusual Suspects" documents baffling, challenging investigations, actual cases that were anything but cut and dry. Episodes feature in-depth interviews with leading law enforcement personnel combined with stylized re-enactments, illustrating how illusive offenders evaded capture for years before being undone by persistent police work.
