Whether the protagonist is a Batsquatch, Skunk Ape, Mothman or Chupacabra, tales of mysterious creatures and unexplainable phenomena have been passed down generations. "Monsters and Mysteries in America" takes a trip across the U.S. to reveal the most cryptic, frightening and brow-furrowing stories. Each hourlong episode focuses on a specific region and the lore of residents who claim to have encountered legendary monsters, ancient spirits or alien beings. With America's dense forests, desert grasslands, and hundreds of miles of uninhabitable wilderness, could it really house -- or hide -- so many mysterious creatures?

Who needs a tackle box, bait and rod to bag catfish when bare hands and feet reel 'em in just as well? It's called hand fishing, and with years of experience and unbridled enthusiasm for a sport that many Americans don't understand, Skipper Bivins and Trent Jackson are experts at it. This series profiles the self-proclaimed hillbillies as they operate Big Fish Adventures, an Oklahoma business that introduces city slickers to the thrill of "noodling" catfish without rods and hooks. "It's a baptism of sorts when we dunk these adventurers," Bivins says. "They come back up with a renewed sense of excitement, a catfish that will blow their minds, and a look on their faces that never gets old for Jackson and me." That look may also be the result of noodlers encountering snakes, beavers, muskrats and snapping turtles that make homes out of abandoned catfish holes.

There are creatures both legendary and unidentified roaming the Appalachian Mountains, and a band of hard-core hunters and trappers have made it their life's work to investigate them. For generations, supposed sightings of these monsters -- with such names as Wolfman, Devil Dog, Wampus Beast, Mothman and Lizard Demon -- have occurred along the 1,500-mile stretch of mountains, and it wasn't until the members of the Appalachian Investigators of Mysterious Sightings had their own personal encounters with these creatures that they became believers. Now, the AIMS crew, led by founders "Trapper" John Tice, Jeff Headlee and Willy McQuillian, use both traditional techniques and modern technology to track, trap and capture these monsters. Maybe AIMS will snag its first one while cameras are filming "Mountain Monsters"!

Evidence suggests that species thought to be extinct are still very much alive, and wildlife biologist Forrest Galante ventures from the Florida Everglades to remote jungles in a search for the truth. Galante explores actual stories behind these creatures' purported demise and, using evidence like eyewitness accounts and last known photos, tries to prove their existence so he can protect them and help them thrive again. In Zanzibar, Forrest reveals species that have never before been filmed and captures evidence that leads to an unforgettable conclusion. Elsewhere, the investigation takes him to Taiwan for the Formosan clouded leopard, the frozen tundra of Newfoundland for the Newfoundland white wolf, and to the island of Madagascar to look for any trace of the giant Pachylemur.
