The program has been recognized as one of the most elite in college football. Texas began competing in 1893. The Longhorns claim four consensus national championships, and have been lead by three Hall of Fame coaches in their history. Dana X. Bible coached from 1936 to 1946, compiling a 63–31–3 record. Darrell Royal won three of Texas' national championships during his tenure from 1957 to 1976. Head coach Mack Brown won 158 games and a national championship between 1998 and 2013. Two Longhorn players have been awarded the Heisman Trophy, running backs Earl Campbell and Ricky Williams in 1977 and 1998, respectively.
Texas has an overall record of 975–397–33, the seventh best win–loss record in Division I FBS, and ranks fifth in all-time total victories. Texas has won 31 conference championships and appeared in 63 postseason bowl games.
