Whenever documentary filmmakers at Discovery Channel and the BBC unite for a project, stellar television seems to follow. "Planet Earth: Africa" stems from this collaboration, as did the breakthrough natural history series "Life" in 2009. David Attenborough narrated that one, and he's back to take viewers on a journey through the vast and diverse continent of Africa. Four years in the making, during which more than 2,000 hours of video were shot, the program consists of six hour-long episodes that feature an array of never-before-filmed species, animal behaviors and previously unknown places. Cameras uncover the extreme dangers of the Kalahari, the dense forests and snow-capped peaks of the Savannah, the dynamic Congo rainforest, the ever-changing climate of the Cape and the massive and parched Sahara.

The wilds of the world have always been magnificent and those of Africa are no exception. These tall giants provide shade in the blistering heat and shelter to animals desperate to escape the scorching heat. They provide haven to herbivores and predators alike -- these are the miracle trees of Africa and include the sausage tree of Zambia, the marula of the Manyeleti, and the camel thorn of the Kalahari. All of these have uniquely evolved to their environments and Africa's extremes, each hosts a haven for the varying animals of the savannas.

Narrated by Tom Selleck and featuring Bon Jovi's "Army of One" as its theme song, the sweeping seven-part documentary "North America" captures a land where life collides with hostile, untamed wilderness in one of the most diverse, deadly environments on Earth. The series, which took more than three years to produce, includes stories of animals struggling to survive unforgiving weather and rugged terrain, from the frigid Yukon Territory and the lush forests of Belize to the snow-capped Rockies and barren deserts of the Southwest. A "making of" episode chronicles challenges that the production team encountered, including Hurricane Irene and other natural disasters.
