The Philadelphia 76ers, known colloquially as the Sixers, are an American professional basketball team based in the Philadelphia metropolitan area. The 76ers compete in the National Basketball Association as a member of the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference. The team plays its home games at Xfinity Mobile Arena in the South Philadelphia Sports Complex.
Founded in 1946 as the Syracuse Nationals, the team is one of the oldest franchises in the NBA, among the eight to survive the league's first decade. Since 2011, they have been owned and managed by Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment.
The 76ers have won three NBA championships: in 1955 as the Nationals; in 1967, led by Wilt Chamberlain; and in 1983, won led by Julius Erving and Moses Malone. The 76ers returned to the NBA Finals in 2001, led by Allen Iverson and losing to the Los Angeles Lakers in five games.
Many Hall of Fame players have played for the organization, including Chamberlain, Erving, Malone, Iverson, Dolph Schayes, Hal Greer, Chet Walker, Billy Cunningham, George McGinnis, Maurice Cheeks, Bobby Jones, and Charles Barkley.
