Having left her job as a CIA analyst for ethical reasons, newly appointed Secretary of State Elizabeth McCord returns to public life at the request of the president, after the suspicious death of her predecessor. Valued by her boss for her apolitical leanings, knowledge of the Middle East, language skills and creative thinking, Elizabeth drives international diplomacy, battles office politics and circumvents protocol while negotiating national and international issues. When Marine Sgt. Nicholas Brody returns home following eight years in captivity, CIA agent Carrie Mathison thinks he has turned and is connected to a terror plot to be carried out on American soil, so she engages him in a dangerous game of cat and mouse that puts America's national security at risk. Dr. Jason Bull is the charming and cocky founder of successful trial consulting firm Trial Analysis Corporation, where he and his team of experts employ psychology, human intuition and high-tech data to understand jurors, lawyers, witnesses and defendants, and construct effective narratives to help their clients win. Bull's team include his brother-in-law Benny, neurolinguistics expert Marissa, former detective Danny, hacker Cable, and Chunk, who helps perfect clients' appearances for trial. "Bull" is inspired by the early career of Dr. Phil McGraw, who also serves as executive producer.
As mayor, Tom Kane is the most powerful man in Chicago, where the constituents have a history of looking the other way as long as the job gets done. And Kane has gotten things done over several terms in office; he knows the backroom politics game in the Windy City and he plays it well. Yet despite his success, Kane leads an otherwise empty existence. He has no one to turn to when he's confronted with the fact that he has a degenerative brain disorder. He's estranged from his wife, Meredith, and daughter, Emma. Bassam "Barry" al-Fayeed, who has fully assimilated to living in America, is the son of a Middle Eastern dictator. Barry is a pediatrician in Los Angeles, but he and his family return to his native country for his nephew's wedding. It's his first visit in 20 years, but things don't go as planned. When his father dies suddenly, Barry and his family are embroiled in political upheaval and forced to stay in the country. A clash of cultures ensues as Barry is thrown back into the familial and national politics of his youth, which he had escaped by self-imposed exile.
