Football Club Shakhtar Donetsk is a Ukrainian professional football club, currently playing out of Lviv. It was based in the city of Donetsk until 2014, when the War in Donbas forced the club to relocate. It moved from the Donbas Arena to Lviv and then to Kharkiv, whilst having its headquarters and training facilities in Kyiv. In May 2020, Shakhtar started to play home matches at NSC Olimpiyskyi. Since the beginning of the 2023–24 season, Shakhtar has played home matches once again at Arena Lviv.
Shakhtar became the first Ukrainian club to win a UEFA competition after Ukrainian independence when the team won the UEFA Cup in 2009, the last year before the competition was revamped as the Europa League, by defeating Werder Bremen 2-1. Shakhtar is one of two Ukrainian clubs who have won a major UEFA competition, the other being Dynamo Kyiv. It is one of Ukraine's most popular clubs, is particularly favoured in the eastern Donbas region. The club draws its history from the very start of the Soviet football league competitions and is one of the oldest clubs in Ukraine.
