CNN's chief Washington correspondent, Jake Tapper, hosts this hourlong weekday afternoon program, which covers all the day's top stories from around the country and the world, headlines that span politics, money, sports and popular culture. "The Lead" works to ensure that viewers are caught up on the stories that matter, often highlighting news that may have been overlooked. Prior to joining CNN, Tapper served as senior White House correspondent at ABC News.
After the 2016 election, CNN chief political correspondent Dana Bash wondered what affect Hillary Clinton's loss might have on a female ever becoming president. Bash then realized that, despite Clinton's missed opportunity, there are plenty of women in Washington who are breaking barriers in a man's town, muscling their way into power and staying there. This series highlights Bash profiling seven women who represent both sides of the aisle, multiple cultural backgrounds and a range in career seniority. They include Lt. Gen. Nadja West, the first African-American female three-star general in the Army; California Sen. Dianne Feinstein, whose political career spans five decades; Nevada Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto, the first Latina to ever be elected to the Senate; and Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao, who rose to prominence after immigrating to America on a cargo ship.
