The Colombia national football team, nicknamed Los Cafeteros, represents Colombia in men's international association football and is governed by the Colombian Football Federation, the body that organizes the national leagues and oversees all national teams. The team competes in CONMEBOL, the South American football confederation, and as of April 2025 is ranked 13th in the FIFA World Rankings, regularly appearing among the top South American sides behind Brazil and Argentina. The nickname Los Cafeteros derives from the country’s historic status as one of the world’s leading coffee producers and has become part of the team’s visual and cultural identity, especially since the adoption of yellow home kits in the 1980s.
From the late 20th century onwards, the national team has functioned as a unifying cultural symbol in a country marked by internal conflict, with World Cup qualifications and major tournament runs often described in Colombian media as moments when “el país se detiene”.
